Defending champion, Ons Jabeur, won’t defend her title at WTA Ningbo Open 2024.

The Ningbo Open is in its second year on the WTA Tour calendar since making its debut in 2023 as a WTA 250 event. The event, now in its second edition, returns as a WTA 500 event, offering 500 points and $142,000 to the 2024 singles champion.

The event will be without defending champion Ons Jabeur, who announced a hiatus for the remainder of the season due to a prolonged shoulder injury. 

Jasmine Paolini and Qinwen Zheng headline the Ningbo Open draw. The duo last faced off in the last eight at the Wuhan Open, where Zheng reached the title round. Paolini and Zheng are seeded to meet in the finals for their fourth tour-level meeting. Zheng, the Chinese World No. #7, has led Paolini 3-0 since their first meeting in the 2023 Palermo Ladies Open.

Paolini could face compatriot Sara Errani in the second round, while Zheng could run into Karolina Muchova in the second round. Emma Navarro, the third seed in Paolini’s half of the draw, while Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova lurks in the draw’s bottom half along with Qinwen Zheng. Last year’s finalist, Diana Shnaider, will open her campaign against eighth seed Paula Badosa of Spain.

Katerina Siniakova joins Muchova and Krejcikova as the third Czech player in the main draw of the WTA singles event. Russian teen sensation Mirra Andreeva, who recently made the top 20 after a quarter-final run at the China Open, is likely to face Krejcikova in the last eight. Andreeva recently picked up her maiden trophy at the July UniCredit Iasi Open – A WTA 250 event.  

The top four seeds — Paolini, Zheng, Navarro and Krejickova have all been given first-round byes in the 32-player singles main draw.

The doubles draw has 16 teams and will have the top-seeded team of Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Ellen Perez make their debut at Ningbo.

When is Ningbo Open 2024 scheduled for?

The main draw of the 2024 Ningbo Open will begin on October 14 (Monday). The week-long event will wrap up on October 20 (Sunday). The WTA 500 is part of the Asian swing, starting with the Korea Open in mid-September and ending with the Jianxi Open in early November.
