Adele stops show and sobs after being surprised by her music icon in tear-jerking moment
Adele was all of us on Saturday night when she broke down sobbing after spotting Celine Dion in the audience of her show.
The British chart-topper, 36, was in the middle of one of her more interactive segments in the latest edition of her Weekends with Adele concert series in Las Vegas, roving the audience, when she realised her idol Celine was there.
Rushing to the My Heart Will Go On icon, Adele put out her arms for a hug with her shoulders visibly shaking as she tried to hold it together.
Once Celine – who is returning to the spotlight after a difficult battle with stiff-person syndrome – had got to her feet to embrace Adele, the legendary chanteuse could be seen whispering to her as they hugged.
As Celine then pulled away, also looking a little weepy, and gently held Adele’s face as she saw her tears, before kissing her hand.
Adele, who proudly previously shared that her most ‘prized possession’ was a framed piece of used chewing gum belonging to Celine, could be seen telling her how much she meant to her.
The British star’s words also clearly affecting Celine, who dabbed at her eyes with a tissue as she sat back down.
Later on in the song, When We Were Young – which Adele asked the audience to help her finish singing as she was so emotional – the Easy On Me hitmaker paid tribute to Celine as ‘one of my favourite people of all time’.
Even more poignantly, Adele had the audience clapping and cheering for Celine, which she graciously acknowledged, in a very special venue.
For the Colosseum at Caesars Palace, where Adele is still playing rescheduled dates for her residency until November 23 2024, was built for Celine’s own debut in Vegas in 2003, A New Day.
She performed that show until 2007 before returning with Celine in 2011, which played intermittently until June 2019.
Other stars who have performed headline residencies there include Sir Elton John, Bette Midler, Cher, Shania Twain, Sir Rod Stewart and Mariah Carey.
‘You can see the unmistakable adoration Adele has for all those who came before her and paved the way for her success. But especially Celine, in that place,’ observed John Spicer on TikTok, adding: ‘Absolutely incredible.’
‘That just made me cry my eyes out!!’ admitted Victoria, while Sandy joked: ‘Who cut the onions?’
‘Two of the most beautiful and iconic voices in the same room,’ praised Adonis Cantu, while Brock Kracman shared: ‘This is so beautiful I truly cannot even process it.’
‘Shook in the most beautiful way,’ added Debbie Hanks.
‘MOTHER BLESSING HER DAUGHTER,’ announced fan account @StatsAdele on X. ‘Greatest vocalists of their generations.’
Adele also reportedly has a pre-show ritual that involves Celine too, with the Grammy-winner said to kiss a picture of Celine that hangs beneath the stage near her dressing room.
It’s thought that in doing this, she draws inspiration from the All By Myself singer.
A source told The Mirror: ‘[What] Adele does is have a kiss with Celine. It has become a little superstition before a show.
‘She walks from the dressing room underneath the stage up some steps where a giant framed picture of Celine is – and she plants a little smooch on it for luck.’
Canadian superstar Celine revealed her challenging stiff-person syndrome (SPS) diagnosis in December 2022, a rare neurological condition that forced her to cancel her world tour.
This summer, she made a triumphant comeback to live performance with her rendition of L’Hymne à L’Amour, made famous by the French singer Edith Piaf, at the Paris 2024 Olympics opening ceremony.
